Backup Tools

The recommendations below allow you to follow the 3-2-1 rule when it comes to backing up:
3 copies of data, 2 different media, and 1 copy stored off-site

Cybersecurity/Online Security Suites

You should recognize some of the names on this list, since at least some of them often come with a new computer or other device. While we no longer have to worry about viruses as much as we used to (much bigger issues going on!), they are still worth the investment because they offer additional monitoring protection and anti-malware services, which includes tracking ransomware.

Parents & Monitoring

Below are popular tools that can be installed on your child's devices to track what is happening and what they are doing. These tools vary, so understand what you want and then determine the best one based on your needs.

Password Managers

Following are popular password managers that have consistently rated well by third parties and/or end users. Nearly all offer a free version, which usually has limited capabilities or features. (For the purpose of this list, free trials are NOT designated as free versions.) Most offer business packages (which allows easier password sharing and management) and family packages.

Personal Data Removal

There are a lot of reasons why you or someone you know may want to remove your data from the Internet, all of which are security related, including doxxing, digital stalking, and more. These tools are designed to do that. Note that most of these services require a monthly or annual fee to maintain.

Note: If you check out the Reddit thread noted below, be VERY wary of people promoting their "favorite" service (as someone has for incognito). They are often affiliate links but not disclosed as such. However, there is a lot of fantastic discussion around what to look for and your options (including directly from the companies, but they always disclose this), so that Reddit threads are worth reviewing. No, you do not need an account on Reddit to read the thread. You do need an account if you want to participate in the discussion.

Note that there are many places that offer free scans, including the ones below, but no free removal services.

VPNs (virtual private networks)

A VPN hides your internet travels and location from advertisers, most hackers, and even government and other censors. Only your internet provider will know where you accessed the world wide web, but not which sites you use. You should ALWAYS use a VPN when you're traveling, even to your local coffee shop.
