SMBs: Your Cybersecurity Isn't Great. It's Probably Not Even Good.

I read an article this week that I found extremely disconcerting.

The upshot? There seems to be some serious cognitive dissonance by entrepreneurs and small businesses about their cybersecurity.

Seven out of 10 are confident that they would be able to quickly respond to a cyberattack, but have you seen that graphic above (see source)? How TF are you planning to respond quickly to a cyberattack when the vast majority of you (73%) don’t even use security software??

And I’m guessing that for too many of you, your “strengthened passwords” is probably ONE strong password where you substituted a few special characters in your favorite password, which now makes the systems qualify your password as “strong.” Or maybe you added a couple numbers and an @ at the end of your favorite password. But since most of you are reusing passwords (72%), that 45% doesn’t even matter.

Reusing passwords is just as bad as simple passwords.

And female entrepreneurs and business owners are worse than male. 20% of you don’t do anything. NOTHING. NADA. ZILCH.

I’m dying, here. (Metaphorically.)

There’s no question about it: Cybersecurity is essential to the health and wellbeing of your business. How important? Well check out this stat:

55% of American adults say that they are less likely to do business with brands that fall victim to a cyberattack.

It was nice knowing you.

And you can’t hide this. Not only because of various laws that require notification, but also because more than half of you will go out of business within 6 months of a cyberbreach.

Heavy sigh.

Keeping from getting hacked isn’t that hard and it isn't even expensive. ESPECIALLY for online entrepreneurs. After all, 95% of all cyberattacks are the result of human error.
